Love as He Loved
“We love because he first loved us.”
1 John 4:19 (NIV)
Reflection
This morning I want to raise a thought-provoking question about Jesus’ command to love others as we love ourselves. It's true, that some struggle with self-love, potentially distorting their expression of love toward others. Yet, we are reminded by John’s words that our capacity to love stems from God’s love for us. Jesus’ call to love one another is rooted in His perfect example of mercy and sacrifice. By reflecting on how He loved us, we gain clarity and strength to love others genuinely. In doing so, we fulfill His command, not merely through our understanding, but through the transformative power of His love working in us turning intentions into action.
Insight
The context of Jesus' command in John 13:34-35 is the Last Supper, where He demonstrated profound humility and service by washing the disciples' feet. This act set a precedent for love rooted in selflessness and servitude. Early Christians, inspired by this example, practiced radical love and community, which became a hallmark of their faith. Understanding the historical context helps us see how Jesus’ words were a call to embody the sacrificial love He demonstrated throughout His ministry.
Key Takeaway
True love flows from God's love for us, empowering us to love others genuinely and selflessly.
