Behavior over Belief

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)

Reflection

Recently a family event provided a crucial reminder: our behavior often speaks louder than our beliefs. While beliefs can be a source of personal strength, they should not become instruments of division or coercion. The call is to focus on how we treat others, echoing Paul's words in Philippians about valuing others above ourselves. What we believe isn't nearly as powerful as how we behave. Our actions are what people will remember when our time here is finished and what we believe will likely disappear into obscurity. This reflection reminds us that the essence of our faith is not just in what we believe about Jesus, but whether we're actually living out his commands daily. As Christians, we are called to embody the image of God as his Kingdom comes to earth as it is in Heaven. Yet, our beliefs can trap us in our own personal hell because we refuse to let go of victimhood or rise above our past traumas. In God, we can become whole again, but the ego loves to hear itself think, talk, and fight for the moral high ground. It's important to remember that no one is good, but God. None of us are worthy except through the grace and mercy of Jesus.

Insight

The early church faced similar challenges to what we see today—differences in beliefs and practices. Paul wrote to the Philippians urging them to maintain unity through humility and selflessness. By looking beyond individual beliefs to communal love and service, the early Christians were able to spread the Gospel effectively. This historical context shows us the power of living out our faith through actions over words, fostering unity and peace.

Key Takeaway

Our beliefs gain true strength when they are lived out through acts of love and humility, reflecting Christ's example.
