Jesus the Poor Man

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

1 Timothy 6:10 (ASV)

Reflection

We see the truth of this verse play out repeatedly in modern headlines. Consider the 2008 financial crisis, where unchecked greed in the housing and banking sectors devastated millions of families, wiping out retirement savings and triggering a global recession. Executives chased short-term profits while ignoring the human cost. More recently, the collapse of FTX and other cryptocurrency schemes revealed how the promise of quick wealth led people—including many who seemed brilliant and successful—to fraud, deception, and ruin. Sam Bankman-Fried's story is a modern parable of someone who "pierced himself with many griefs." But we don't need to look only at billionaires and Wall Street. The love of money shapes everyday life in subtler ways. It's the employee who compromises their integrity for a promotion. It's the family drowning in debt because social media convinced them they needed a lifestyle they couldn't afford. It's the relationship destroyed because one partner prioritized career advancement over presence and connection. It's the church that waters down its message to keep wealthy donors comfortable.

Insight

Paul wrote to Timothy in Ephesus, a wealthy trade city where the temple of Artemis drove a lucrative idol-making industry. The tension between faith and financial gain was very real for early believers there.

Key Takeaway

Money is a tool; love for money is a trap. Guard your heart by keeping God, not gain, as your ultimate pursuit.

Question to Sit With

Review your recent spending or financial worries. Ask: Am I seeking security in wealth rather than in God?

Today's Challenge

Give something away today—money, a meal, or your time—as a tangible reminder that your possessions don't own you.

Prayer

Lord, reveal any area where money has too strong a grip on my heart. Help me hold my resources loosely and trust You as my true provider.
