Hearts Over Minds

“In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him.”

Proverbs 21:1 (NIV)

Reflection

Throughout my life I've rarely seen rational arguments change a persons opinion about God. I've come to the realization that people's opinions, formed emotionally, are not easily swayed by logic alone. Over time I've accepted that only God can truly change a persons heart and this challenges me to rely less on persuasion and more on prayer, asking God to transform my loved ones in His perfect timing. The ultimate test of faith is allowing people to figure out where they stand in their beliefs. Christ allowed his disciples to wrestle with their questions and his teachings up until the crucifixion. Yet, even after his resurrection some of his followers still doubted. Jesus doesn't treat this as his cue to force the faith, but an opportunity for God to show up on his own terms. Patience without judgement, is the practice of true discipleship.

Insight

Throughout biblical history, we see God changing hearts in profound ways. Saul, a fervent persecutor of Christians, encountered Christ and became Paul, a passionate apostle. This transformation wasn't the result of debate but a divine encounter. Similarly, God hardened Pharaoh's heart for His purposes, showing His supreme sovereignty in guiding human hearts according to His will.

Key Takeaway

Only God can change hearts; our role is to pray and trust in His sovereign power.

Question to Sit With

How can I focus more on prayer and less on persuasion when engaging with others about my faith?

Today's Challenge

Today, commit to praying specifically for someone you know who is resistant to faith, asking God to work in their heart.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we lift up those whose hearts are distant from You. We acknowledge that we cannot change them through arguments or debates. Only You can transform hearts. We pray for Your Spirit to move powerfully in their lives, drawing them closer to Your love and truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
