Speaking Truth in Times of Trial

“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

Matthew 10:16-20 (NIV)

Reflection

In recent news, Father Custodio Ballester and his associates faced significant legal challenges in Spain, accused of hate speech for their criticisms of Islam. This eight-year ordeal highlights the complexities and consequences of speaking one's truth in a public forum. Matthew 10:16-20 reassures us that during such trials, it's not merely our words but the Spirit of our Father speaking through us. This passage encourages us to maintain our integrity and faith, even when facing adversity for our beliefs.

Insight

Matthew 10 is a directive from Jesus to His disciples, preparing them for persecution. This context mirrors Father Ballester's situation, where he stood firm in his convictions despite legal challenges. This biblical passage underscores the expectation of opposition for believers and the divine assistance they receive in proclaiming the gospel.

Key Takeaway

In trials and testimonies, it is not our words but the Spirit of God that speaks truth through us.
