The Highest Mountain

“Again, the devil took him to an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory.”

Matthew 4:8 (ASV)

Reflection

Could you resist all the kingdoms of the world? How much do you value being in right standing with God? When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness he rebuked Satan using the power of the scriptures. He turned to God's word to resist temptation even after being offered all the money, fame, and power owned by the ruler of this world. When faced with your own temptation, remember to cling to scripture not your own strength. God will deliver your from the wilderness just as he did our savior if you put his will first.

Insight

Written around 80-90 AD, this passage draws on Jewish traditions about mountains as places of divine encounter (like Moses on Sinai) and reflects the early Christian understanding that Jesus faced real temptation yet remained sinless. The "high mountain" may be symbolic rather than literal, representing a spiritual vantage point where earthly power and glory become visible.

Key Takeaway

'Trust in the Lord' isn't just ancient wisdom; it's today's GPS for navigating life's most complicated routes.

Question to Sit With

How can shifting your decision-making process to include seeking God first impact your choices in today's digitally-driven world?

Today's Challenge

Today, choose one decision you have been struggling with and commit it to prayer first before seeking any other advice or consulting digital sources.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, as You faced temptation and chose obedience to the Father over earthly power and glory, grant us strength to resist the allure of worldly ambitions that would draw us away from You. Help us to worship You alone and find our satisfaction in Your kingdom rather than the temporary glories of this world. May we trust that Your way, though sometimes difficult, leads to true and lasting fulfillment. Amen.
