A Heart of Compassion

“Put on therefore, as God's elect, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving each other, if any man have a complaint against any; even as the Lord forgave you, so also do ye.”

Colossians 3:12-13 (ASV)

Reflection

With the assassination of Charlie Kirk, it's important as Christians to remember that the world first hated Christ. However, he didn't hate the people that crucified him, but instead he rebuked the Devil who rules this world. Although it's easy to be angry about the injustice and murder of a brother in Christ, this passage calls us to clothe ourselves in virtues that Christ himself displayed: compassion and forgiveness. It’s a reminder that in every interaction—be it with friends or strangers—we have the choice to extend grace. Reflect on your last encounter where someone erred against you; did forgiveness lead your response? These verses not only guide but challenge us to act in love, reflecting God's infinite mercy in our finite dealings.

Insight

Colossians was written to encourage believers to live out their heavenly calling through earthly actions. The original audience, navigating a pagan society, was urged to embody virtues that testified to their transformation through Christ. Today, these principles remain potent amidst societal division and global crises. By embodying compassion and patience, we bridge divides and foster understanding across cultures and experiences—a reflection of the kingdom of heaven on earth.

Key Takeaway

'Clothe yourselves with compassion,' not just as an ideal but as daily practice—showing God’s love in tangible ways.
